オリジナル・リリースから40年以上!キース・ジャレットの伝説的なLP10枚組ボックス・セット「サン・ベア・コンサート」のシリアル・ナンバー入りの復刻エディションが、オリジナルのアナログ・ソースから再現した限定盤で登場。

1976年にプロデューサーのマンフレート・アイヒャーを伴って来日し行われたソロ・ピアノ・コンサートを全8公演のうち、京都(京都会館ホール)、大阪(サンケイホール)、名古屋(愛知文化講堂)、東京(中野サンプラザ)、札幌(厚生年金ホール)の5公演を完全収録した「Sun Bear Concerts」は、ジャズ・レコーディングの歴史の中でも画期的な成果と言えるでしょう。Down Beat誌がオリジナル・リリースの際にジャレットの即興演奏に関し次のように表現している。「巨人の発明は、圧倒的に親密で、リスナーを引き込み、虜にすることができる。ジャレットは再び彼の創造的な意識の洞窟に足を踏み入れ、驚くほどの力、威厳、そして暖かさを持った音楽をもたらした」1978年に初出されたこの美しく制作され、イラスト入りで紹介された10枚組の音楽は、事件やディテールに富んでおり、ジャレットが無限の創造性を持つ演奏家あることを明らかにしている。「ジャレットがジャズ界で最も偉大な即興演奏家の一人であることを示した」とイアン・カーはピアニストの伝記の中で書いている。

今回のエディションはオリジナルのLPセットを復刻したもので、故 Haus der KunstのキュレーターであるOkwui Enwezor氏は「ジャズ・レコードの標準的なパッケージからの独立を宣言したECMの代表的作品でこのようにして、ECMはそのレコードを最高の芸術的、概念的秩序を持つミュージシャンによる芸術作品として扱いました」とコメント。

1976年11月に京都、大阪、名古屋、東京、札幌で開催されたソロ・コンサートの模様を、日本人エンジニアの菅野沖彦と、キース・ジャレットと共に日本を旅したプロデューサーのマンフレート・アイヒャーの録音で収録した芸術作品。セットのパッケージには、バーバラ・ヴォイルシュのデザインによるブック型のパッケージには、クラウス・クナウプ、内藤忠幸、相見明の写真が掲載されている。

This gargantuan package -- a ten-LP set now compressed into a chunky six-CD box -- once was derided as the ultimate ego trip, probably by many who didnt take the time to hear it all. You have to go back to Art Tatums solo records for Norman Granz in the 50s to find another large single outpouring of solo jazz piano like this, all of it improvised on the wing before five Japanese audiences in Kyoto, Osaka, Nagoya, Tokyo, and Sapporo. Yet the miracle is how consistently good much of this giant box is. In the opening Kyoto concert, Jarretts gospel-driven muse is in full play, up to the level of his peak solo performances in Bremen and Koln, and the Osaka and Nagoya concerts have pockets of first-rate, often folk-like, even profound, lyrical ideas. The Tokyo concert takes a while to get in gear, but when Jarrett finally locks into one of his grooving vamps, he carries us along, and there is a memorably melodic encore. In Sapporo, Jarrett breaks from a nicely flowing pattern into a jumpy rhythm that reminds one of C&W guitar fingerpicking, and theres some exuberant barrelhouse stuff and outbreaks of dissonance in part two. Each concert is placed on a single CD, while the much briefer sixth disc is reserved for the encores from Nagoya, Tokyo, and Sapporo. While Sun Bear breaks little ground that his earlier solo piano albums had not already covered, it is nevertheless richly inventive within Jarretts personal parameter of idioms. If price is not a barrier, the Jarrett devotee need not hesitate. ~ Richard S. Ginell
