The Queen of Pop returned to her throne with 2026s Confessions II. The sequel to the Grammy-winning 2005 catalog highlight Confessions on a Dance Floor, Madonnas 15th studio set is presented as another non-stop dance mix, one sweaty hour of escapism punctuated by some welcome introspection and reflection on life, death, heartbreak, and her own illustrious career. Stuart Price returns as the primary producer, with additional songwriting/production input by the likes of Arca, Mirwais, Cirkut, and Andrew Watt. Even more euphoric and club-focused than its predecessor, Confessions II places Madonna back in a space where she thrives, leaving the uneven 2010s behind with this intentional course correction. For the first time in a while, there are clear radio singles: "Bring Your Love" with Sabrina Carpenter oozes 90s house energy, interpolating Inner Citys "Good Life" and recalling "Vogue," while the joyous, name-dropping "Danceteria" is a walk through New York City nightlife history. Named after the club that helped score her a record deal, its an album highlight, riding a squiggly bassline as Madonna delivers spoken-word verses like Debbie Harry and references "Walk on the Wild Side" to really drive the N.Y.C.-point home. Settling into the midsection, Feid and Tainy join on the Latin-tinged "Read My Lips" before Price and Italian duo Parisi get nasty on the driving "Everything." Martin Garrix gets the pulse going on "Bizarre," a yearning, slowly building standout that explodes with some angelic vocal highs, stabbing synth strings, and one of the albums most satisfying entries. Things start to wind down on "Fragile," an emotional gut-punch that could have been on Ray of Light, while the throbbing Stromae collaboration "My Sins Are My Savior" would fit nicely on Erotica or Bedtime Stories. Saties Gnossienne No. 1 is even sampled on the trip-hoppy hypnotizer "Betrayal." The last guest on the album is a touching surprise, as Madonnas daughter Lourdes (billed as Lola Leon) lends her smoky vocals to the heartfelt, skittering duet "The Test." Closing with the wistful "L.E.S. Girl," Madonna takes a trip down memory lane, remembering a younger self in the big city, poised to conquer pop music in the decades to follow. Blissful, cathartic, and, for some listeners, a huge relief after an arguably hit-or-miss decade, Confessions II is exactly what fans needed. Judging by the lyrical depth, production quality, and winning spirit, its exactly what Madonna needed, too. Reviving her catalog with this unexpected gem, she reminds everyone of her power and prowess with her best album in decades. ~ Neil Z. Yeung
