映画音楽やテレビドラマの音楽といったサウンドトラック盤、及び舞台ミュージカルのオリジナル・キャスト盤のレコードやCDを専門に発売する会社「ヴァレーズ・サラバンド・レコーズ」の中心的な人物だったロバート・タウンソンが退職し、あらたにプロデューサーとして制作したプロジェクト。ジョン・ウィリアムズの有名な映画テーマを、フルート、チェロ、ピアノの室内トリオのために編曲・演奏されたアルバム。『ジェーン・エア』から『E.T.』『スター・ウォーズ』『シンドラーのリスト』『ジュラシック・パーク』、そして最近の『ファベルマンズ』まで、50年以上にわたる素晴らしい映画音楽のヒット曲を集めた2枚組アルバム。

フルートのサラ・アンドンは、現代音楽アンサンブル、ブライトワーク・ニュー・ミュージックのソロ・フルート奏者であり、ロサンゼルス・バレエの首席フルート奏者を務めていますが、数多くの映画音楽、テレビ、ビデオゲームのサントラのソリストとしても活躍しています。

チェロのセシリア・ツァンは、パリ国立高等音楽院でアンドレ・ナヴァラに学び、バルセロナやフィレンツェでの国際コンクール入賞など、ソリスト、室内楽奏者として活躍するだけでなく、映画業界やロサンゼルスのレコーディングスタジオでも何百もの映画サウンドトラックの録音にかかわっています。

ピアノのシモーネ・ペドローニは、1993年のヴァン・クライバーン国際ピアノコンクール優勝など輝かしい経歴をもち、リストなどの超絶技巧なども得意としていますが、近年では映画音楽をアレンジした演奏が話題となっており、2017年リリース《ジョン・ウィリアムズの主題とトランスクリプション》は、「その美しさに感銘する最高のリスニング体験」と絶賛されています。

A listeners first reaction on hearing the trio forces of music by film composer John Williams may be that the group, specifically pianist Simone Pedroni, must have had to do a whole lot of reimagining. But Williams apparently greenlighted the project, which receives an excellent studio recording from film producer Robert Townson, and its more than a mere novelty. The players are Sara Andon on various flutes, Cecilia Tsan on cello, and Simone Pedroni on piano. They form an able ensemble, but special credit goes to Pedroni, who did most of the arrangements (a few of the duo pieces were arranged by Williams himself). Potential listeners will immediately notice that many of the big Williams hits are missing; there are only two excerpts from the Star Wars films, while there are rarely heard cuts from Hook, The Sugarland Express (Steven Spielbergs first collaboration with Williams), and a trio of cuts from Memoirs of a Geisha. So the album doesnt really work as a set of Williams reminiscences for chamber ensemble. But this is exactly its point. There are more imaginative orchestrators than Williams, and those who engage more deeply with popular music and with electronics. However, Williams remains unmatched at capturing the essence of a scene in a few well-chosen melodic strokes. Pedroni has left the big scores mostly aside, focusing instead on melodic detail. Aficionados of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, which gets the largest single chunk of selections, can marvel at Williams portrait of "Hagrid the Professor" and other moments from the film. The program is nicely structured, and the listeners attention is unlikely to flag over the span of the double album. A nice, offbeat find for film music buffs and any admirer of Williams, however casual. ~ James Manheim
