クラウス・マケラがフランスを代表するオーケストラ、パリ管弦楽団を指揮し、ベルリオーズの『幻想交響曲』と、2025年に生誕150周年を迎えるラヴェルの『ラ・ヴァルス』を録音しました。イギリスの『ガーディアン』紙は今回の録音の直前に、昨夏のBBCプロムスでのベルリオーズの演奏について、「マケラは間違いなくスターである。彼がオーケストラの奏者たちもスターにしていることがその証明である」と評しました。これほどパリ管弦楽団にふさわしい楽曲は他になく、マケラの録音はシャルル・ミュンシュ、ヘルベルト・フォン・カラヤン、ダニエル・バレンボイムといった偉大な先人たちに続くものです。

クラウス・マケラは1996年フィンランド生まれ。12歳からシベリウス・アカデミーにてチェロと指揮を学び、若くしてスウェーデン放送交響楽団の首席指揮者に就任。これまでにフィンランド放送管、ヘルシンキ・フィル、ライプツィヒ放送管など、世界の一流オーケストラと共演し、高い評価を得ています。「数十年に一度の天才指揮者の登場」とも評されました。2020年に24歳でノルウェーのオスロ・フィルハーモニー管弦楽団の首席指揮者、そして翌年パリ管弦楽団の音楽監督にも就任しました。20代での快挙が世界中のファンから称賛されています。

A friend, upon hearing Berliozs viola concerto Harold en Italie, said, "I love it when it gets really loud." A similar sentiment might be applied to the Symphonie fantastique, one of the great action-packed sagas in classical music. The hot conductor Klaus Makela may have felt that he had to have a new take on this celebrated work, and here he delivers one: a low-key Symphonie fantastique. In the Orchestre de Paris, of which he is music director, he has a group that can realize his every wish in relation to this work, and the string sounds are smooth and lush. Listeners may differ as to the success of the overall concept, however. The "Marche au supplice" does not quite convey the showy grimness of this movement, and the recurrences of the melodic idee fixe lack urgency. Yet, the detail that comes through in the first movement is notable, and the surfaces are nowhere less than beautiful. Any hesitation about the Symphonie fantastique does not apply to Ravels La valse, which brings down the curtain. The ineluctable structure of this work can speak for itself, and Makela brings it home with strong impact. This is certainly an album on which reactions may vary, but there is no doubting that Makela has realized the sound he wanted. ~ James Manheim
