The "Lost Tapes" title slightly oversells the contents of this 2025 release, for the tapes were always there in the Deutsche Grammophon labels archives and at one point were planned for release. However, that is the end of the list of complaints about the album, whose performances remain staggering. The music was recorded live in 1965 in France and Switzerland, and it found Richter at the absolute height of his powers. One gets an idea from these Beethoven performances why, according to one well-known story, the sparse audience members at Richters debut recital in Moscow rushed to get their friends at intermission, resulting in a full house by the end. Richter was quite a virtuoso and continued to play difficult works into his eighties, but in Beethoven, Richter wasnt so much a Russian. His interpretations are broken down to the articulations of individual notes and their combination into larger structures. The profundities of the late sonatas are absorbing indeed here, but sample as well the Piano Sonata No. 18 in E flat major, Op. 31, No. 3, where Richter seems less interested in a light pastoral quality than in following the interior of Beethovens mind as he developed the structural complexities that were to come. Every note here seems to shine and to lead forward to something else. The live engineering is quite strong, representative of the beginnings of Deutsche Grammophons sonic golden age. Kudos to whoever at the label dug this out. It made classical best-seller lists in the spring of 2025. ~ James Manheim
